In early 2018, the London office’s Women’s Leadership Initiative identified key aspirations for the office—one of which was to make a meaningful impact within the community through ZS Cares. A local connection led the WLI team to Yes Futures, a school-based charity that creates programming to build confidence, motivation and engagement through educational experiences outside of the classroom.
The budding partnership with Yes Futures gave ZS’s London office the chance to participate in a special tradition: “World of Work Day.” In June, ZSers enthusiastically welcomed a group of sixteen students from Chelmer Valley High School in Essex to “walk in a consultant’s shoes” through a sneaker-centric activity centered on problem-solving.
Students were split into teams and tasked with developing a marketing strategy for a pair of sneakers. Each team was told to declare a target segment, a unique selling point, a catchy brand name and message and a reasonable selling price. After the exercise, students reflected on the skills they used to solve the problem—the same skills ZS consultants use to solve similar questions for clients.
In the afternoon, ZSers from the office joined the group of students to share their personal stories. Based on the diverse array of experiences, the students learned that career paths at ZS—and many companies—are not always the same. By exposing them to the breadth of activities and decisions that led ZSers to our firm, students could envision a potential path of their own.
The day ended with an office tour, including beautiful views of London. “We were so grateful to the group,” said Strategy Insights and Planning Consultant Sarah Thompson. “They were very engaged throughout the day, asked lots of great questions and all seemed to take something away. Giving back to the community was a very rewarding experience.”
