What I cherish most from my summer internship experience at ZS is the people. My first day jitters melted away upon the warm welcome we received from the Shanghai ZSers. The welcoming feeling only continued throughout the summer, as we were given opportunities to get to know our colleagues through fun team-building events, such as bouncing around at a trampoline park and putting our problem-solving skills to the test during an escape room. I was pleasantly surprised by the personal support and attention I received from my mentor, professional development coach and the ZSers on my project. When I applied for my internship, the interviewer told me that ZS is a place where you can make friends – and after a rewarding summer, I have certainly found that to be true.

During these networking events, perhaps the most frequently asked question by MBA candidates is, “What makes your firm different?” Often, companies respond, “The people.” As this response became more common, I grew increasingly skeptical if companies were sincere or if this was just marketing jargon.

It’s 4:45 a.m. and the sun is breaking over the ninth-floor helipad. In my hand is a cup of coffee. In the pockets of my white coat are pages of scribbled notes, two blue pens, a red stethoscope, a pair of gloves, a roll of gauze, a granola bar and a pager. My team just finished surgical rounds and we pause to take in the quiet stillness of the early morning hour, as we know it will be the last time we sit down that day.
